Not sure TB, its taken me a week though, to go from flying a frig with crapy gun skills, to flying a cruiser outfitted with heavy missles, a hybrid shield tank, and some medium guns.

If your in a mining barge, i wouldn't imagine that it would take too take long to get enough money to buy a battleship. They have characters that will haul, and the police force will usually send one or two characters to guard you.
