Ohh, speaking of Tom Clancy and "spy" novels, I guess you would call 'em. A good author I have read a few books from is Vince Flynn, and I particularly liked his book Memorial Day - good read if you like that genre.

Stephen King's - The girl who loved Tom Gordon was excellent.

And I love pretty much every Forgotten Realms book I've read.

Pretty much anything by Zelazney (Lord of Light and the Amber series especially).
Anything by William Gibson.
George RR Martin Song of Ice and Fire series (wish he'd hurry up and write more).
John Varley (Titan, Wizard, Demon).
Steven Brust (the Vlad Taltos novels followed by the Khaavren "histories").
Glen Cook and the books of the Black Company.
Orson Scott Card and the first couple of the Ender series.

and some random favorites:
Souls in the Great Machine - Sean McMullen
Burning Bright - Melissa Scott
Revolt in 2100, Job, Friday, Starship Troopers - Robert Heinlein
Kiln People - David Brin (the Postman wasn't a bad book either)
Midnight at the Well of Souls - Jack Chalker
