It is a very good book, I'm 600 or so pages into the first and its really interesting, lots of twists and mystery's and stuff like that. One thing I really love about it is its not a polished goody two shoes kinda fantasy novel, where if your hurt you can get healed and junk like that. You got people getting murdered and breaking there legs, you got your whore house's and your gambling and treachery too! its really down and dirty and realistic. It also has a good balance of fantasy+real world to = and amazing universe and story.

One thing I'm finding is it seems like theres a book before this series that kinda explains a little bit of the history, is there one?

There's a couple graphic novels about "Dunk & Egg", which is Sir Duncan and the future Aegon V. They take place about 60-80 years before the novels I believe.

you also get history told from the viewpoints of other characters reminiscing about the past in later books as well-something i very much enjoyed about the series.

Just finished reading the first book, wow, i gotta say the last few chapters were very dark O.o, lots of sadness and death ha.

Im sooo angry about a certain person dieing though! God he was the best character ever

I had the same reaction when I first read Thrones. Even though I hated to see him go, it was what really got me into the series. The fact that absolutely anybody is "fair game" really keeps you flipping the pages.
