Best Comic Books

Alright, we have been making our own storyboards in my drawing class and basically, I really want to start reading comic books again. I need your guys opinion on what the best comic books/series are because it has been a long time since I picked one up. If I recall correctly, the last comic book I picked up was when the Spawn series were just coming out.

They're actually re-releasing the spawn series from the beginning in big collector's volumes. If you liked it, you should check out Amazon or your bookstore for them.

I've been a long time comic book reader, but the only one I've really been reading with any regularity is the Punisher MAX series, which I really enjoy and has fantastic artwork.

One of the really famous graphic novels is From Hell, which is based on Jack the Ripper and won a bunch of rewards. It's very good, but it's extremely long and probably hard to find these days.

In terms of more general comic books, I enjoyed Ultimate Spiderman for the time I read it. I have a pile of Aliens Vs Predator comics in my closet somewhere and I know that somewhere, in some dark corner, I actually have one of the original Turok: Dinosaur Hunter comics that the N64 game was based on.

I only check out some comics and graphic novels randomly, stuff I see on ign or elsewhere. Stuff I've enjoyed:

Sin City, 300, Halo Graphic Novel, Punisher MAX, Batman: Dark Knight Returns, some Spawn, From Hell (^ Which you can pick up in a BIG volume at Barnes and Noble... at least I did), A History of Violence (Graphic Novel), and the recent Marvel Zombies

Might be some others I can't think of. I also check out some random stuff every now and then from Batman, Spiderman, Iron Man, etc.

Anything that is a Justice League Trade Paper Back (big book) is usually good, just about anything batman is good, artwise and story wise. If you want to get into a story line you can try to pick up all the issues of Civil War and 52 that have been released but thats alot of stuff.

New JLA is good. Deadpool and Cable is good if you like a little comedy in your comic books.

I think it depends if you mind/don't mind reading the oldies. Its hard to beat out the "Infinite Guantlet" series by Marvel. An old classic that is remarkable.

If the new school intrests you more, you may want to look at certain things, like Lomi said, anything with the new JLA. It seems DC is going more mature while Marvel is loving the "plot twist" technique. If you wish to look at Marvel since your more familiar with that, check out:

Avengers Disassembled, The Hulk: World War, The Civil War.

All my opinions obviously.

Edit: I forgot about the NEW Thunderbolts. Villains turned heroes. I haven't read it yet, but I am killing to get my hands on them. Venom, Bullseye and I forget the rest turn hero... what do they have planned?

Conan

Actually, I really dig Cary Nords artwork on Conan. I only buy the TPB. I'll pick up graphic novels of Batman *like Hush...Hust storyline was awesome*, but my doctor friend has been letting me borrow recent Marvel stuff. Just started reading House of M. The Earth X trilogy is mahna mahna

They are re-releasing the Spawn series!? suhweet! I'll definately check out those JLA as they sound interesting, and I have always loved Deadpool for some reason he was my favorite so maybe I'll check up on him and Cable.

I was never really that interested with Batman or Superman though, I don't really know why. Maybe I changed now and will find a liking to them, I wonder if my old comic book store is still open, well tomorrow is my day off from work

If you've never read it, you MUST check out "Batman: Dark Knight Returns" by Frank Miller. It's probably the best mini-series I've ever read. It's old and sells for quite a bit, so look for the trade paperback unless you're a serious collector with a fair bit of money to throw at it. A lot of the other darker Batman stuff is good, too (i.e., "The Cult"). You usually can't miss with X-Men although I haven't read it in a while. The new "52" series by DC is good from what I hear but I haven't read it either. As someone else said, Deadpool is great if you like some cheekiness in your comics.
