i while ago i was extremely interested in the Spartans and after that the Romans alot and read some extremely good books about both of them.
The Isle of Stone, By Nicholas Nicastro, its an extremely good read about the Spartans, also where i got my main MMO name Antonidus The Gates of Fire, By Stephen Pressfield, AWESOME book about the battle of Thermopolyea or as most of u know it "300" Emperor Trilogy about Julius Caesar. Field of swords, death of kings, and gods of war. By Conn Iggulden. they are must reads for any greek/roman history buff like myself! |

Anything by Valerio Massimo Manfredi. It's all fiction, but it's very food. His best works have been translated to English. My favorites are Tyrant (Dionysus of Syracuse), Empire of the Dragons, and his Alexander trilogy (the movie should have been based on it). He also has a book named Spartan, oddly enough, but I haven't read it.

I preferred the 'Meditations of Marcus Aurelius' no tactics just thoughts on governing and philosophies kinda like Machiavelli's "the Prince" but more Idealistic
'civil' and 'gailic wars' by Julius Caesar Civil wars is a easier read not having to figure out 4 billion names of gaul tribes you've never heard of but its cool shit even translated it cool to hear who they thought. Herodotus of Halicarnassus's 'the History' if you like Greek history it explains alot about the Perisan and Greek wars n conflicts plus some great one liners and antidotes to quote from. I've been dieing to find an english translated manuscript from the spartan Xenophon who marched his army across the Anatolia in retreat to the sea and which most of our info on the working of the spartan army derives. best I usually find is footnotes and work sightings in other historians books.
