Orwell is indeed a talented writer. He was writing in the 30s, that might explain why some have tastes that run another way. His works need a context, which makes them very resourceful books for schools to analyze. If you are skeptical of his books, check out some of his short stories and essays, in particular one called Shooting an Elephant. It chronicles his days living as a policeman in Burma.
1984 and Animal Farm were just books written in the last few years of his life; indeed, there are many earlier works by him that show his quality. He died just a year after 1984 was published I believe. Check out his earlier fiction!!!
