Pick an author, you won't be dissappointed
Sci-Fi / Speculative Fiction
Robert Heinlein - Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land, Time Enough for Love, Job:A Comedy of Justice, Friday, or just about anything else he wrote (some of his earlier stuff is dated but still entertaining) Fantasy Steven Brust - Taltos series Terry Pratchet - Discworld series (funny stuff) Last edited by Pwnzilla; 09-08-2007 at 07:15 AM. |

And as for Terry Pratchet. I'm English, so I should get his sense of humour, and I've tried 3 of his books now, just didnt enjoy any of them. I liked the adventure game and the idea of his world if that helps?!?

No problem on my part Pani. Everyone has different tastes. Mine tastes like chicken.
I know Robert Jordan and what's her name of the Potter series are apparently popular authors as well, but I read a couple of their novels and they just did not grab my interest enough to prompt me to purchase additional works. I threw those names out there for any that were unfamiliar with them and might be looking for something in the genres. Stranger in a Strange Land was pretty far out there even for Heinlein. Variety is the spice of life. Think what a boring world it would be if we were all the same. ![]() |

No question about Tolkien's stuff. He just put so much effort into developing the whole world/mythos.
If you have not read it, get The Silmarillion. It is basically the whole history of Arda (the world of Middle-Earth). The whole LoTR series is just a brief flash in it. Gives you a much better perspective on the quality of his work. Wiki link to the timeline to give you an idea.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Arda |

Killed to Death

Tolkien's stuff was really good, that's definately up there. George RR Martin's stuff is really good. Robert Jordan's stuff is good too, just too many characters in his Wheel of Time series. He should take a note from George and slaughter some of his main characters.

Lav Tolstoj's book War and Peace is one of the best books ever written imo, ground breaking at the time it was written for revealing the true nature of blue blood society and arguing that it isnt glorious to die for your country amongst other things.
