Hurray Wikipedia!!

EDIT: Talking bout the Griffin/Rampage match. It was meh. I hate when fights, especially title fights, come to judges.
I think everyone hates when fights go to decision (except the season one ultimate fighter finale match....that one was f'ing awsome). I am very happy griffin won because he has a better attitude, isn't cocky as shit, and doesn't run his mouth all the time. rampage on the other hand never stops running his mouth...I wonder if he even trains that much or he is to busy trash talking. If anyone watched interviews and things before the fight rampage was saying "he cant last 5 rounds with me," "ill knock him out first round," ect. If you underestimate the underdog you will lose to the underdog. That is why there is so many upsets...I believe the underdog works harder for what he wants because he has to.

ya'll remember the first MMA fights with Royce Gracie, when they did the tournament ladders to determine the champs. those never went to decision but they weren't makin money off the fight as far as pay per view goes. Fights would last so long that they had to implement rules to make the fights shorter.

Anywho, those were real fights before they gave em gloves. It was nice to see the single discipline fighters like karate black belts get owned by wrestlers and boxers.

Question for ya'll. Who can tell me why they make em wear gloves now?

those gloves are so the fighters don't break their knuckles. They really don't help much for the people receiving the punch

this is true but not the reason they implemented the use of gloves.

Tank Abbot started wearing gloves to protect his knuckles at around UFC 3 I think. The Unified Rules put gloves in around 1996, whether or not the UFC made them mandatory before then I'm not sure.

The first mma fights were NOT UFC 1, despite what Dana White will have you believe. MMA was going on in Brazil since the 1940's, at that time it was known as "vale tudo" (translates to: anything goes) and was pretty much a Gracie Jiu Jitsu crusade to prove their style was the best and gain acceptance in the martial arts community. MMA was not limited to Brazil as catch wrestlers and judokas were fighting each other even earlier than the 1940's.

As far as pro mma Japan has had the Shooto and Pancrase organizations since the 1980's. These were set up so pro wrestlers could actually fight each other to see who was strongest and featured a different rules set than vale tudo.
