What makes an island an island
What makes a piece of land an island?
Today during the opening for the Olympics, one of the commentators said that Madagascar is the 4th largest island, under Greenland, and two others. Australia wasn't one of them. So why isn't Australia considered an island? If you really think about it, everything SHOULD be an island, because every chunk of land is surrounded by water. |

I think it has to do with Australia being a continent. If Greenland would have happened to be a continent it wouldn't be considered an Island either. I think it's the simplest reason to explain it.
