Funcom's "The World Online".. WTF

I was browsing Funcom's site, and came across a message that said they were looking for GFX designers for AoC and The World Online.? Does anyone have any information about this mysterious world, or am i just kidding myself that this is mysterious, and everyone else already knows about it..?

I haven't heard of that before, I wonder if anybody has any info on that. I'll google around a bit to see if I can dig something up.

The World Online (working title) is an upcoming MMORPG from developer Funcom, makers of Anarchy Online and Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.

The premise of The World Online is as follows:

set in 2023
aliens
supernatural
Contrary to some rumors, this game has nothing to do with (nor is it inspired by) .hack.[1]

A teaser trailer for the game was produced and the Norwegian newspaper IT-Avisen had the following to say about it:

The trailer contained a few short scenes with in-game graphics, but consisted mostly of a barrage of teasing one liners shown in rapid succession on the screen, with wording like "The Quest for the Grail continues", "Aliens have landed on our planet. They are still here", and "There is an afterlife".
"The action is set to the year 2023, in our on world. but the world isn't exactly how it appears to be. The game is full of inspiration and references to anything from Dan Brown to Harry Potter", said Funcom's Product Director Jørgen Tharaldsen.
that's from wiki

Thank GOD.. Finally a Harry Potter MMO.

That would be rediculous.

Sounds pretty interesting though. I like the idea of a lot of modern concepts all hodgepodged into a game. Would make expansions pretty easy.

Yeah they've been working on that game for awhile now too. Before that they were working on a game called Midgard, which also looked very interesting but they ended up cancelling (maybe because they got the rights to Conan?).

Anyway, my one fear was that as they produced new games they might forget about old games. Like, when Warhammer comes out, now much love is EA Mythic going to show DAOC anymore? Not much is my personal opinion. The differences between that situation and this one keep me content however. For one, Funcom will have 3 MMORPGs, but all of them in a different setting (AO=sci fi, AoC=fantasy, World Online=Modern Alternative universe?). The other news that I found very heartening is that they signed that long term deal to make Conan MMORPGs until 2023. It shows that they wont be forgetting about Conan any time soon, plus the fact that Conan is thier most recognizable game due to the license (the movies, the comics, the novels, plus a new movie in the works). So it's all good for us Hyborians!

Heh... could that explain why AoC updates have been so crappy lately? *sigh*

I hope Funcom is not trying to chew up more that they can swallow...

NO...my dreams...you just broke them. You're a toxic person! OMG...*cries*

I wonder if they'll be able to use The World Online without getting in trouble with the makers of dot hack? I'd certainly play in a Harry Potter MMO...oh god, did I say that outloud? Kill me now!

Hmm... this may sound mean of me too say, but i really hope "the world" doesn't make it into production. If i'm going to invest my time and money into AoC i'd at least like to see the game get Funcom's full attention both prior too and after launch.
