The books?

How many of you have read them? I'm going to pick one up tomorrow and start the read any suggestions on what one to start with? What did you think of the books and how much alike do you think the game will be?

I remember reading a Conan book a very long time ago, used to collect the comic's when I was a kid, but it's been quite some time since I read any Conan literature. From my understanding, the mmorpg is supposed to be more true to the nature of the books, then that of the movies. But to me, they are both good.

I can't recommend you to any of the books since I haven't read any of the Conan stories in a long time like I said before, but I've head that REH's first story of Conan is a good one, but.. that's just what I've heard.

If you can only get one pick up Hour of the Dragon, as that is the time frame the game will be set in. It is also in the three book series that collects all of Robert Howard's works unedited. Those books are The Coming of Conan, The Bloody Crown of Conan, and The Conquering Sword of Conan. I've read all three, they are the perfect resource for the original works. Anyway, if you were going to read just one the second one, Bloody Crown, has the Hour of the Dragon in it.

If you can afford all three, then pick up the whole trilogy and start with the first one. They are written in the order that Howard wrote his stories, which is not chronological but shows how he evolved the character over time. They only go for about 13 bucks each on Amazon.

If you do start reading his books, realize that his world is complex, and it would be worth your while to get a map. I like the one they have for free at the Conan RPG site (www.mongoosepublishing.com, go to "Conan", look at bottom for downloadable map).

He really started modern swords and sorcery (as opposed to mythology) which makes his stories all the more fascinating, and the reading is quick because he writes frenetically, and alot of his stories are short stories so they are a quick read. Have fun!

Heh heh you never heard of the movie? It's the movie that propelled Schwarzenegger to fame... that and then later Terminator solidified it for him. Wow.. go rent it!

Thx very much, hour of the dragon will be my first read then I think. Since it will be the most like the game.

Conan the Barbarian is a good one, but Conan the Destroyer is.. alright. I would give the first an "A" and the second a "B-". It wasn't bad, but it didn't have the gritty feeling of the first one.

yes, they sure are. I just got the complete set at Best Buy for like.. $13.. both movies. Worth the price, I think. I have Conan the Barbarian on VHS though, just thought I should upgrade.
