Warcrack (Warcraft)

Quote:
There's a country of 6 million people that's not on any map. It's called World of Warcraft, and it's a virtual country, a computer-generated fantasy environment that you can access, for a monthly subscription fee, via the Internet. It's also one of the most immersive and successful video games ever created, and it could be the future of electronic entertainment. Rob Pardo, 35, vice president of game design for Blizzard Entertainment (although minor deity would also be an applicable title), led the team that designed World of Warcraft, which involved generating from scratch history, geography, anthropology and ecology of a fully realized fantasy world spread over two continents. The game's 6 million fee-paying players can slay monsters, go on quests and even perform everyday tasks like fishing, cooking and tailoring. If World of Warcraft—aficionados call it just WoW—gets any more popular, it may be up for a seat in the U.N.
There's more here.

They nicknamed it "Warcrack".. there's only one true original mmo out there in my opinion that deserved the name.. Evercrack.

I agree, but WoW has been impressive to me to be pretty mainstream. Sure part of it is just the Warcraft liscense, but Blizzard must be doing something right. I think I realized how big WoW was when I heard Dave Chappelle played it and even mentioned it on stage

Yea, but I could put warcraft down and not play a couple days with no big deal. Everquest.. you couldn't, especially if you were going to camp a mob that only spawned every 12 hours lol.. you needed to sit there.. and wait and/or kill crap until the mob spawns to drop your precious item. You couldn't leave the game, otherwise you'd miss out. That made you play for extremely long intervals.

maybe that's what drove dave chappelle to go crazy....

i'm not sure why wow is so popular, it seemed rather simplistic to me. maybe that's the thing people are more attracted to...simplicity.

I think it's popular because it's so easy to play and get in to. It wasn't really difficult for me at least, although I didn't play horribly long.

EQ - not to mention when you finally decided to quit for the night at 4 am and you happened to get jumped and killed. Thus, spending another couple of hours shouting for rezzes and retrieving your body. I never quit with my dead carcass out in the field.

I think I quit 1 time with my Paly stuck in some dungeon, just didn't want to put forth the effort of getting my corpse back that night.

WoW is impressive in a few ways, but highly over-rated. It was allright until i tried the warrior class...i almost died of auto-combat boredom. I only lasted a month playing WoW.

Drawing a blank on what they called the instance dungeons, but didn't you have to wait for your body to spawn if your party got wiped or you died, did not get rezzed and the timer ran out? Think I remember piles of dead people outside Guk entrance.

I think the easy interface and game play combined with insane leveling speed are WoW's main draws
