Killed to Death
|
I played EQ on the PC a long time ago, basically from the release of the game until sometime during the Kunark expansion is when I stopped.

Killed to Death

Yup, also didn't have ingame maps (at least when I played). If you wanted to find something, you actually had to go look. Also, standing on a hillside looking out over the horizon and thinking to yourself "how far does that horizon go?" was kinda cool too. The land just felt a lot more grand and big due to not having all these quick methods of travelling (which was later ruined by SOE's expansions).
Back then people tipped other's for buffs, SoW was a big one. People paid for ports. Magic User's could bind anywhere, aka for those that don't know.. binding is where you spawn after you die. Other non-magic users had to bind in cities. That cave in the commons near Freeport was a big trading area, people would stand and sell their wares.. sometimes it caused a lot of lag back then, but it's all good. Ship travel was cool. Sure you had to wait for the ship to come to the dock, and also wait around on the ship while it was sailing which took like 15 minutes or so, but it was a good social experience as well. Death, although somewhat sucky at a high level due to losing a bunch of XP.. made the whole "OMG, I BARELY LIVED THAT!!" experience much more meaningful. Nowadays with the recent MMO's... I'd do suicide runs just to see what's in high level areas, not caring if my character died. Character classes felt a lot more traditional and unique. They made the bard, the druid, the wizard, the rogue, and other's quite fun to play. The monk.. those were the days when you had to have under a certain weight that you were carrying item-wise, otherwise it would effect your AC. You character kicked ass with a flurry of blows with just your fists. The druid.. the best druid class of any MMO I've played was in EQ1. Had good healing, good damage, and a ton of utility. The bard... the best bard class I've seen in any game. For those that don't know.. Bard's in EQ1 didn't have magic points, all their abilities were passive.. just play a song, or juggle some songs, and your abilities would just keep going without worry of mana. Also the bard was semi rogue-like, could dual wield, etc. The necromancer rocked too. The game had a lot of flair too, when you were buffed it would say stuff like "You feel more enlightened".. or "You feel faster" and etc. You didn't have signs if some mob will aggro you, you had to actually test it out to see. Mobs would kill other mobs sometimes, such as in Oasis of Marr a Sand Giant would wander over to the Dervish camp and kill a couple. Looking back at it now the graphics were pretty plain. But the game is pretty old now.

I remember they gave everyone Return Home at lvl 1 to stop the whining posts about that certain spell.
Freeport Bazaar was the lag central/place to be if you were selling or anything. And the map in EQOA well, there was no map so I had to go to Allakhazam and print a square map with blocks that listed each zone in there exact spot and just hope I ran into it lol ![]() I liked that no map thing too, did raise your senses and made you think how far does Tunaria go? As far as character creation I thought it was kind of bland for the PS2 version was like 3 variations of everything you could change about your toon ![]() The death debt was horrendous at 60 but I liked how half of the xp you got went to the debt and you kept half for Class Masteries or skills, it gave you an even bigger incentive to xp grind at the level cap. I only played gnomes/dwarves so no bards here Had a Gnome necromancer Tinkerer and a Dwarf Warrior they had the best towns I thought Klik'Anon right next to Fayspires and Moradhim inside a mountain just made me go wow. I loved the scenary just made me feel more like I was apart of the world and actually made a difference |
