Worked well in Neocron before I learnt the game was run by Nazis. Gave you a real insentive to win, and not die. Gave you something to fight for, and helped make that moment of victory that but more satisfying, especially when you get something good.
In the origional Neocron, people who PK-ed their allies and friendly NPC's dropped loads more loot, so it stopped people laming.

My vote goes to FFA PvP with limited looting. I've always liked Shadowbane's system, where you can loot the inventory of a player you kill. It's always given PvP more meaning to me. However, I would say that Quest rewards should be unlootable, as I've read/heard that the more powerful weapons and armor would be given as quest rewards.

I think the way to do it would be to declare war on a "cool" guild full of our friends, like the Eminence, say. That would allow for a FFA-type environment without the attendant annoyances. I can see it now. I'm walking down the street and Ninja Kitten blasts me from the alleyway. I post "Nice one, you got me. Enjoy that armor you ripped off -- you won't have it long muhahaha" I'm still having a good time in that scenario. Think I'll cross-post this on the AoC boards. Just waiting for more details, but it does look like the bulk of us want alot of pvp. From my own personal experiences, pvp servers do have more of a "closeness" to it due to the relying on your fellow guildmates for protection, questing, and combat. But still, I'd like to personally know more details before we make any decisions on the matter. But, from the way this looks it appears that the bulk of us may want a pvp server. We'll have to see down the road a bit.

I voted for guild-based PvP. I've tried PvP in all its forms in various games over the years: open, closed, instanced, looting, no looting, non-existant, etc. and I found each of them flawed in their own way.
Totally open pvp and looting lead to havoc, frustration and griefing. Instanced pvp is far to restricting; it quickly becomes an exercise of rote and that saps any fun from the gameplay. Lack of penalties and rewards makes this far too impersonal; instead of strategy and skill winning the day, it becomes a question of who is willing to die and respawn more times then the other guy, making pvp a tedious form of endurance test. The most fun I have ever had in pvp by far was in the early days of WoW, before crappy battlegrounds ruined pvp in the game, during the guild rivalries. Their were events, raids, ambushes, squrmishes all over the place and they were always fun because it was always open, always different yet you always had a goal in the form of your enemies - names on both sides you came to know, hate and respect. |
