Techno Mix Software

I'm just wondering how much people know about this. I use to have some sort of mix software a long time ago (about 8 years ago) and I used to make techno (ambient/trance/house) for fun.

But.. since I'm out of the loop for so long, does anyone know of any good quality software? I know ProTools is probably the best, but I'm not going to fork up thousands of dollars. I thought I heard Fruity Loops was pretty good, it's pretty cheap too. There's also one called Ableton or something like that, and also Reason.. I think. But I've always heard good things about Fruityloops.

I used a program about 7 years ago called Cool Edit Pro, I may be dating myself here but I thought the UI was pretty easy to use....I am not sure of the cost, think it was around $400 at the time, I found a free "trial" off of file sharing...

Tons of stuff there if you want to get into music production. Fruityloops is alright for playing around, and can make some pretty good things, but if you want to be serious I would go with Cubase or Reason.

I just got fruityloops for now (XXL version, which includes producer), although I'll probably upgrade to one of the one's you mentioned later. One of my friends is in the music business (DJ at some clubs) and he uses Pro-Tools, although.. he doesn't really make music, he just spins other people's stuff and mixes it.

I used Cool Edit years ago too, also.. gah.. think it's called ReBirth or something like that. But it's been a long time.

Fruityloops is used by some of the "big wigs" of techno even today. I saw a list of names of big shots who uses it. It's been a few days since I saw it, but I remember DJ Tiesto uses it.. and I thought Orbital or something like that.

Anyhow, I'll probably get something else besides FL at some point, but from what I read fruityloops is actually a extremely powerful music tool, although people usually overlook it's capabilities in comparison to other more expensive and well known software.

Well Dj Tiesto is the number 1 DJ last time I checked so perhaps Fruityloops has some serious potential?

I believe he's #1 for 2 years running now.

You just got tricked by marketing, DJ Tiesto may have it, and may use it, but when he actually does his own stuff, or mixes his tracks, I bet you everything I have that he doesn't use fruityloops. It's a great program, no doubt about it, but he would have to create his own samples and pull them all in to get anywhere with the program, because what you're given is not going to fly on the air.

I've sat down with Benny Benasi and David Guetta while my friends talked to them about it all. They said they played around with fruityloops as well, but when it came time to make the real stuff, they went through CuBase and Reason because it offers much more. A good example would be GIMP vs Photoshop CS3, Gimp can do some things PS can, but PS offers much more when you learn the program, goes to better stuff like 3D Rendering.

Anyways, not saying FL is bad, I use it myself when I'm bored, and a really good friend of mine produces with it as well, so it's not that I'm bias or anything.

Seriously though, Tiesto doesn't use FL, lol :|

Tiesto is not #1 anymore, he was, when he actually put out decent stuff, instead of rehashing every hit he's ever had. Tiesto got lazy, he doesn't bring anything to the scene anymore, he has his money, he has his fame, he honestly doesn't even need to anymore, his name brings in huge crowds. Also, you're forgetting that there are more sub genre's within electronic music, and believe me Tiesto is not #1 of electronic music.

I've heard from other's what you've said concerning FL, but I've also heard the opposite from plenty of sources too. Is FL the best out there? I never said it was anywhere. It's a good way to get "back into it" IMO, and that's exactly what I'm trying to do. I haven't messed with this stuff in a heck of a long time aside from messing with my friend's ProTools. So on that note, it's a good value for what you get.

Also to point out, I never said Tiesto or anyone else souly uses FL. With their bankrolls, they probably have a ton of everything. So was I tricked by marketing? No, I wasn't. I KNOW they use other stuff aside from that also, it would be stupid not to since they have a lot of money to shovel around for the top end stuff. All I was looking for is "did they use it", and from what I read some of the top dogs did. Does FL do what I need it to do right now? Yea, it does.
