Opera

Okay, now, I KNOW we have to have some opera fans/performers in the guild. I mean, it's so big, I can't be the only one, right?

Anyways, just talk about operas in this thread. What you like about them, dislike, favorite operas, over-rated ones, etc.

I'm a tenor, working on my senior year as a Vocal Performance Major. Just started doing opera a year ago and I LOVE it. Bel canto singing is just so incredible, and my instructors all tell me that I have a good chance of going to a good music school when I graduate

My favorite opera, of the few that I have seen, is probably La Traviata, though I'm a huge fan of Wagner's work, and hopefully will get to see one of his performed.

It's great. I'm currently reading the Oxford Illustrated History of Opera, and the best time to read it is during the reading time at the Day Care that I work at. When the kids asked me what it was, I told them. The older girls looked at me with big, wide eyes and said:

"Cool! Does it have Phantom of the Opera in there?!"

/facepalm

I'm a pretty big fan though I don't wander too far off of the beaten path. I'm with you on La Traviata though my wife refers to it as 'Pretty Woman' music. From Wagner I like Siegfried, Parsifal and Die Walkure the best. Three of my favorites are from Puccini - Madame Butterfly, La Boheme and Tosca and I also listen to Bizet's Carmen and Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci pretty regularly. With all this plus comtemporary music I still have 2/3 of the space left on my iPod. Technology can be such a wonderful thing.

I saw Phantom of the Opera, that was pretty good, but otherwise I don't go to operas.
