Soul Calibur IV & Legends

Soul Calibur Legends was announced two months ago and will be released for the Wii, while Soul Calibur IV has been announced for the PS3 and the 360.

The Soul Calibur News Thread has updated information on both games.

Like I said in the other thread, SC Legends looks like absolute shit. But IV has a chance to be good. Hopefully they make some changes to keep it fresh.

All we know at this point is that Ivy's rack has gotten even bigger and is on display in full effect. Maybe that's all you need in the next SC.

well with the Wii is not about "looks" it's about playability and fun.

Soul Calibur Legends is an affront to the games industry. The horrendous gameplay and horrible graphics not only shame the Wii as a platform, but lowers the reputation of a remarkable franchise. Wii fans should be appalled at Namco's clear lack of concern with the title, and should expect more.

Graphically speaking, Legends is nothing short of unacceptable. If the game could even remotely look like Soul Calibur 2 on Gamecube, we'd be, at the very least, satiated. Instead, what we saw were blocky recreations of our Soul Calibur favorites trapped in boring, poorly textured environments that make the Dreamcast original look like a modern technical achievement. There is absolutely nothing to praise about the visuals in Legends: the art is generic, and the characters are stiff and lifeless. The screenshots that have been released are poor representations on how this game really looks.

The gameplay doesn't fare any better. Legends is a mindless hack and slash with poor controls. Enemies stand around, dumbfounded, as you hack away at them by shaking the Wiimote. The combat is imprecise, and simply not fun. We did appreciate the dodge: shaking the Nunchuck will allow players to make a quick dash. There was no challenge, nor depth to the battles. Ultimately, each encounter was reduced to wild waggle sessions. Wii owners deserve a lot better than this -- Namco, we'd point to Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess as an example on how to properly implement sword attacks in an adventure game (and please learn how to create a proper lock-on!).

If we had to give an award for most underwhelming disappointment of the show, Soul Calibur Legends is an easy candidate. Unless this game goes under a serious redesign, don't expect the first Soul Calibur game on Wii to be anything more than a complete disaster.

[Update: A Namco representative was right to ask us to point out that this is, in fact, an early build of the title which isn't due until later this year (note these were our impressions, not our review). While many of the shortcomings appear to be design-oriented, she said the team was looking to make changes based on the feedback gathered from E3 players. We're certainly hopeful they can clean Soul Calibur Legends up before its release in Q4 '07. For other impressions of the E3 demo, check out Wired, 1UP, and Gamespot.]

First, keep in mind Joystiq really never craps on games like that.

Second, it does have the last part, but it's releasing in Q4 of this year.... so they'll be entirely redesigning the game in that period of time? I think not.

I'm not someone to go entirely off of previews, but the consensus is bad, and this trailer looks to prove them right. Looks like a bad PSX or N64 game.

and btw, I'm a SC fan, so I would love for this game to be good. I really wish it was. Maybe they can put out a good game in the 4th Quarter, who knows, but if I'm just wagging my wiimote in lifeless arenas at lifeless enemies, I'll pass.

I hope they can clean Legends up by release or it will be tossed aside like SC3.

Hero, what are you impressions on SC4?

I saw the E3 trailer and the teaser trailer. Basically it just looks like more SC from those trailers, but seeing that they are willing to experiment a bit (look at the story mode and the emphasis on character creation in 3, for example) who knows what could be in store.

Graphically it looks nice, about what you'd expect from a next gen entry in the series. Ivy's boobs are definitely really out there, but otherwise the regulars look pretty much the same, so far that is. I'm waiting for a preview to see what they might be changing/adding. I hope they don't play it safe and try some new things. If I wanted to play Soul Calibur 1, 2, of 3, I'd go play them. Give me something new.

SC4 isn't going to be about what kind of innovations they're going to make, but whether they can balance it out.
Oh and this one better have an online mode lol.

I think SC4 will be ok but I would like them to do something new like online play. And a side note does anyone think Ivy's boobs are too big I mean how can she fight with them watermelons. Someone is in need of a second spine to keep them things up.

LOL Ahh the wonders of graphics... but yeah, for SC4 to be even moderately successful, they need to be able to balance the game. SC3 was a disgrace to the series because some characters were broken, like Tira and Talim. SC2 is my game,(as seen in my avatar) it's so perfectly balanced that the replay ability is amazing. If they can balance SC4 then the online play would be the next logical step in the series since the game is so competitive. The days of traveling for tournaments are over. Thank you intraweb gods!
