That's why you start as a count, it's what I did lol.

My short learning campaign.

I started off as Odo, Count of Kent (England). He proposed a marriage to a daughter from the neighboring Count of Sussex. They agreed and my Count got married. About a week after the marriage, my wife started cheating on me with my brother (lol). Eventually the King of England let me raise one of his children as my ward (foster), which is quite a prestigous thing imo. My Count also had several kids with his new wife (hopefully they were mine, damn brother lol). Eventually I earned enough prestige to lay claim to the land of Sussex. I put my claim down, and then declared war. Moved my army there, and was defeated.

But the fun didn't start there! After pissing off my neighbor, he goes and cries to the King. Well, the King sends his vassals and some large armies and crushes what's left of my little county. Then I'm forced to surrender and game over lol.

I got the game online from gamersgate.com, make sure to get the expansion.. makes it look better and play better. I've also heard of some people crashing to desktop... yet I've had no problems and been playing for a few hours now.

Also, for those that don't know you can adjust the speed of the game with holding CNTRL and pressing the + or - keys. Makes things quicker if needed.

The political aspects of this game is very deep. If you go around just waging war left and right, it 'could' lead to issues for you back at home. Have to be careful.

lol, what's funny.. is I read that's a way to get the crown. You can do it through lineage and marriage.. just a bit difficult.

Ok, replayed starting with the Count of Kent. First issue of business is to find a wife for my count. So I look around and notice the King of England has a courtier that's free for marriage, she is also in charge of the King's spymastery. So I marry her, she comes back for a single day and gets an illness. She dies about 1 week later. Hmmm.. I wonder if there's something going on behind the scenes lol.

I still can't figure out the UI, the "hints" mentioned something about pausing the game, can't find the pause button to actually study the UI, I had to pick a tiny island north of England so they would leave me alone as I learned

I just picked the title of count to learn, easier that way. Usually you don't have enough to warrant anyone attacking you yet. I believe you can pause with the CNTRL and then pressing +/- key's. There's so many options in this game, even if you played the same path the first time (ie, like me picking Count of Kent) it will always be radically different due to so many variables.

From what I read in some reviews.. is that you don't need a "claim" to take another territory if the land belongs to the *cough* infidel. You just march in, fight, and hopefully take it I believe. Also, I like how there's so many ways to affect your character's traits. There's supposed to be a ton of them to get and lose depending on what you do. Also, I read that some of them just come to you such as in medieval total war, just by the way you play. So it's a mixture of methods.
