Diablo a MMO?

I wouldn't ever classify Diablo or Diablo II as MMO's, but yet I keep seeing people do it lol. So what's the vote on this?

would you classify phantasy star online as an MMO? because a lot of ppl do yet it has somewhat or the same elements as diablo ii

but I voted no because of the fact that I always just thought of diablo on the internet was more of a benefit rather that being meant for it

I voted yes, because back in 02ish, d2 was one of the most populated online multiplayer games, and youd be suprised on how many people still play today...

It lacks a persistent environment, so no. Also, it was multiplayer and online but you never had more than a handful of people on a single server, so it wasn't really massive.

If you think Diablo games are Online games then you might as well throw Command and Conquer and all RTS in the same catagory. You might have been able to play it online but it's more classified as Solo/LAN/Multiplayer genre.

I dont consider it a MMO because it isn't massive (I could go into detail but honestly its not 'massive')

This is from wikipedia, it's how I would classify what a "massively" multiplayer game is, an extremely large group of people playing in a single environment (server). Diablo 1 and 2 is not, it's just a small group of people playing. If people would classify those as MMO's, then so would Counter-Strike, BF42, etc.. etc.. etc.. But they are not.

Thousands of people playing at the same time on a single server is massively multiplayer.

I think a lot of people have the whole "MMO" term messed up.
