SF3 is cool but I didn't want to pick certain characters to be able to compete, but overall that is the wrong mindset when playing games that have tiers that mean something. Hugo can be decent, and in the right hands can give even other good players that use Ken, Chun-Li, and Yun a run for their money but in general just don't have the tools to beat them on a consistant basis.
Smash Bros is also very bad when considering how good it is for a competition game. Brawl is awful. From what I hear you need to be playing Meta Knight or Snake to be winning consistently if you want to compete.
I have no idea about Soul Calibur since I've never tried to dip into its competitive community and my general preference for 2D fighters over 3D. Even so I'll be picking up SC4 this week. I was watching people play it for a good part of this past Saturday and damn is it good looking. As far as game play goes, I can't say.
