issue with ram

I just recently finished building my new machine nd I got an issue with ram, now I have dual operating systems xp pro and vista premium, I have 2 ram sticks in my computer one is a 1g and the other a 2g....the bios recognizes all 3gigs of ram and so does vista but xp does not, system informtion only shows 2gigs, I understand this might be do to it being a 32bit os but what I wanted to know is if xp will only utilize 2 gigs max? or if I added more ram would it still only show 2? If there was a way around this limitation I would be grateful, I don't mind if I have to add another gig but I want my full ram to show.......any ideas anyone?

intel core 2 quad 2.4 ghz
nvidia geforce 9600GT 516MB 720 MHZ overclocked x2 SLI mode enabled
3 gigs of ram

Comps are really ticky about ram. It's very bad practice to mix sizes of RAM. Ideally all of you sticks should be identical. You might have to spring for another identical stick. Some of the more hardware experienced members might be able to give you more insight.

The 32bit OS allows 3.5 or so RAM, doesn't matter which OS, and you can't go around that besides buying a 64bit OS.

It seems to be an XP problem
Memory Support and Windows Operating Systems

But Gult might have it when he mentioned that all sticks should be the same, make sure they are all same PC DDR# and they're all the same channel, single channel or dual channel, etc.

If you want to confirm the function, use an application/benchmark that supports SLI and gives you either a frame rate score or graphics score. Run it with SLI enabled/disabled and see what the difference is in the results.

Try running something like 3dMark for XP or Vantage for Vista.
