8800GT or 9600GT?

So I was going to buy this new computer from best buy(don't try to talk me out, only place my parents trust me getting a computer) in a month, decked out with all the goods including my favorite, an 8800GT. I was sooo happy when Best Buy finally got a comp with the 8800GT in it and im finally gonna have a good computer untill my bud tells me the 9600GT is coming out, I havn't heard much of it.

So when is this thing coming out? How much is it? And is it not worth getting the new comp with the 8800GT in a month?

Ah nevermind, after doing some research, which I should have done first, I find my friend just saw the larger number and went "THAT 1 IZ BETTUR!!1". From what I saw it looks like the 9600GT is more of the midrange, for people who can't afford the 8800 and are stuck at the 7000 whatever. Is that about right or am I wrong?

Taken from newegg reviews

T0m$h@rdw@re did a review on this card and it runs on average only 12-15% less, on performance, than 8800gt 512 and beats 8800gt oc 256 outright. 3850? please move out of the way. They ran this baby against 3870 and surprisingly it only being out-performed by the 3870 by 5% or less and that's only on no-AA. When it's enabled 9600gt and hd3870 are practically the same (thanks to the unfixed bug from the ati driver). I'm not really a fanboy of either but the facts are out there. And obviously Nvidia is doing their homework and ATI are doing catch-up's

Yes, the 9600GT is below the 8800GT in both price & performance. It is nVidia's response to ATI's 3850 as it was out performing the older 8600GT/GTS that was nVidia's card in this price/performance slot. If you can afford the 8800GT, it is the better choice. Just make sure it is a 512mb version and not one of the 256mb versions.

Didn't someone say there was an optimized (new series) 8800GT 512? It was something like (G92) series...wasn't it? Can someone tell me, or link me the product. I'm fairly certain that this optimized version beats out the 8800 Ultra 756 in every aspect except for AA.

Wouldn't this make the 8800 GT the *best* card you can get right now?

well the gt isnt the best but yeah they have the improved gpu but there is also a GTS version with the new gpu wich is the 8800gts 512mb, and its not AS good as the ultra but for the price you get like 5-10% more performance the best card on the market is the 8800 ultra OC you can get it for like 700-800 ^^ the gtx is really close to the new gts in some point the gts is better too.

The G92 chip is the chip used in the 8800GT & 8800GTS 512mb cards.

The G80 chip is the chip used in the 8800GTS 320/640mb, 8800GTX, & 8800 Ultra cards.

The 8800GTS 320/640mb cards are pretty much obsolete. You don't want to purchase one of those as the 8800GT & 8800GTS 512mb cards respectively will outperform them.

The distinction between the 8800GT and 8800GTS 512mb is that the 8800GT has only 112 stream processors enabled on the G92 chip to the 128 stream processors enabled on the 8800GTS 512mb. Essentially the 8800GT has ~88% of the processing power of the 8800GTS 512mb. Both however utilize a 256-bit wide memory bus. Both versions come in various configurations that vary in core/memory/shader clocks at different price points.

Some examples below:
8800GT cards (112 stream processors)

EVGA 8800GT Stock (600 core / 1800 memory / 1500 shader)
http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...512-P3-N801-AR

EVGA 8800GT Superclocked (650/1900/1620)
http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...512-P3-N802-AR

EVGA 8800GT KO (675/1950/1674)
http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...512-P3-N805-AR

EVGA 8800GT SSC (700/2000/1728)
http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...512-P3-N806-AR

EVGA 8800GT Akimbo SC (720/2000/1500)
http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...512-P3-N808-AR

(all the above except the last, utilize a single slot configuration, the units below all utilize a dual slot cooling solution)

8800GTS 512mb cards (128 stream processors)

EVGA 8800GTS 512mb (670/1940/1674)
http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...512-P3-N841-AR

EVGA 8800GTS KO 512mb (700/1980/1730)
http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...512-P3-N845-A3

EVGA 8800GTS SSC 512mb (740/1980/1835)
http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...512-P3-N847-A3

Actually in terms of raw performance the 8800 Ultra family is still the *best* single GPU card on the market.

For greater performance, there is the dual GPU ATI 3870 X2 card and nVidia's soon to be released (mid-March) dual GPU card the 9800GX2. Both those cards are essentially two 3870 cards or two 8800GTS 512mb cards respectively, melded into a single card that occupies only one PCI-e slot.
