i have absolutely no preference...i used to be a die hard amd fan but recently found intel to be just as useful...i think both have applications where they clearly out shine the other, so really for me it has to do with what i want the computer to do

Intel fan here - much like Pedro said more of a familiarity than anything else. Intel has always treated me well and thats why I stick with them.

Thanks for all the advice and replies. I have been back and forth on this subject for days.......But as I have been scanning recently one cpu has been the topic of posts on many hardware boards and gaming sites touting it as one that will do the job on current and future games yet you do not end up spending money on things that are not useable at the present or near future.

That cpu is the Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8400 3.0ghz. It has been getting alot of positive right up so I think it is the one I will go with. Not that expensive at the moment either.

Mobo was another story. I want one that did SLI as well as supported this processor and had DDR2 support. So after an exhausting search I believe I will go with this one. Gigabyte GA p35 DS4 ver2.0 or ver2.1. Ver 2.1 adds ati crossfire technology and the ability to use a little faster memory. In the form of DDR3. But I am a Nvidia man so the ATI crossfire does not interest me. So I will probably go with the version 2.0.

Now as far as memory. Going to go with 4gb of 1066 something. Looking at OCZ Reaper but have not decided.

So there you have it. Thanks to all.

Steel.

Steel, a warning on the OCZ reaper memory. Make sure of the air cooler you will be using because many people have run into a clearance problem with the OCZ reaper.

If you do not have that problem though that style is currently my favorite

To stick on target:

Processor: AMD
Memory: OCZ or mUshkin

Great chip... really great tbh for $200. you'll have no probs getting it up to 4.0ghz. Make sure you get the one with the 6mb cache.

Thanks all. Diss I will keep that in mind as far as the clearence. But I think I have altered my MB target a little.

Going to shoot for the MSI P7N Diamond. I has the ability to SLI and has the latest 780i chipset in it.

I will have to check the clearence of the reaper if there have been issues with the heat spreaders I am assuming. Make sure it will fit on the MSI.

Gotcha HeLLmutt...the 6mb is the one I am looking at. Thanks.

Steel.

The 8400 is about the most OOHmazing processor you can buy at the moment. Price and performance, it can't be beaten.

Talking about the clearance with the CPU cooler if you use one of the BIG after market ones.

I know I was vague, but in my defense I was tired

AMD is for gaming, smaller cycles for more adaptability.

Intel if for large calculations, like calculating Pi.....

there you have it.

Pretty much sums it up, but if your going AMD and want a quad, get their X4 Series, the original Phenom is complete crap compared to intels Q6600.

so my rec for gaming (all the chips are 45 NM so less energy consumption except for the amd dual core)
Dual Core: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ (90 NM but is the best imo for amd dual core atm.)
Amd : AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ (125W) Dual-Core Socket
if not Intel : Intel Core 2 Duo E8400

Quad Core:
Amd : AMD Phenom X4 9850 (125W) Black Edition Quad Core
if not Intel : Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 (Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 if you can get it but good luck with that)

hope this helps!
