Intel or AMD?
Have run both but currently have an AMD FX 55 powering the system. Was thinking of going with the Athlon 64 FX-74 3.0GHz Processor. What do the intel boys recommend and does any have this AMD processor? Also from that I am going to want to go with a new Mobo, would like it to be SLI capable and preferably designed for gaming or at least one of the better gaming mobos and finally....ram....what is your choice about that? I am running OCZ PC3200 Platinum ver 2 currently. Of course the ram would have to be recommended for gaming and work in the new MOBO.
All help is appreciated. |

Difficult question to ask, we all have different preferences, I will die by a AMD, no matter what facts, charts, interviews, anything you trow at me with Intel being better, from my personal experience AMD has always been better for gaming.
Also AMD is cheaper and offers all the processing speed you'll ever need as a gamer and/or regular college person. Both have single, dual and quad cores, no matter what everyone says unless you are running a C++ debugger, big video editing and formatting or a server you will never need all the process power a Quad and some high end duals offer for gaming, heck some new games still have problems dealing with dual core CPU's. /gives to floor to an Intel member.

I really love AMD and have used them in all but one of my machines. That one machine I ended up taking back because the whole system was just bad from the get go, and that was the last machine I ever purchased. So for the last 12 years I've been building my own machines with nothing but AMD's. They are cheaper, good for gaming, great at the other things and they don't go obsolete the moment you purchase them. I've got good things to say about Intel as well but if I were you I would use an AMD for your gaming rig.

Really, it is hard to give much credit to AMD at the current moment. Intel currently has the top CPU's no question about it. Best price and performance for their dual and quad cores. However, if you are an AMD fan boy their current chip will get you by just fine. In the past AMD has always had the top spot in the gaming community, but not so much at this current time. |

It is true that at this moment Intel is at top, but as history tells us, it will change, so you buy a top Intel today, then you might fid that AMD will be on top next month. Who's on top shouldn't matter when picking CPU's as they all become obsolete in less than a year either way.

I prefer AMD, but when I build I use the best I can afford regardless of manufacturer. You just need to look at your budget and decide which processor will give you the best gaming performance for your $$$.
On the RAM, I prefer OCZ as well. I have 4 sets by them as well as two of their branded PSUs and have never had issues with any of them. |

I find picking the cpu to match the tasks at hand are an advantage in choice making. In this case gameing would be more suitable on an AMD as they are geared to work better with said specs. Even though intell might have a faster running cpu atm, doesn't mean jack in the world of compatability and functionality.

AMD all the way. The only thing intel holds over AMD is a stiff price and higher 3dMark06 score which is not the ideal way to benchmark gaming performance.
I went with the spider platform, IMO and many others will say while your FPS will be a tad lower you will have a more vivid and pretty picture. My source games emulate uncanny beauty. Like butter.

Well ive always previously bought AMD,and i agree that they are the better gaming processor, but Intel are ahead of the game atm they are technically ahead with the quad processors unless Amd can pull its finger out they are gonna get left behind. I hope they do, but this time i went for intel quad core 6600 runs well
