PSU issues
I just upgraded my old POS with a new processor and have a nice graphics card on the way. I tried putting in a decent power supply and the computer (an old compaq persario) just wouldn't boot. The led on the new PS was lit and everything was connected right. I put in the old supply and it starts up fine. The new ps mounted to my case with a little modification. I did notice that the empty pin on the old PS and the new one were different. I decided to RMA the new one just in case. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas on what is going on? I really need this new power supply because the new graphics card is a power hog (18a needed on 12v rail).

That pin might have been the problem, some mobo's won't start when missing the slightest thing from the PSU.
But also might be that you're using a Compaq, not only the worst of all the brand PC's, but all brand PC manufacturers trick their PC's so they can't work without certified parts by them, which usually cost 2x-3x more than they really cost. If the new PSU coming back doesn't work you might want to think about building a new PC by yourself or a friend, if by some reason you decide to just get another brand PC, don't go Compaq next time ![]()

Here's the power supply that won't work:Newegg.com - HIPRO HP-D3057F3R ATX12V 300W Power Supply 100 - 127V/ 200 - 240V UL, CSA C22.2. IEC, EN - Power Supplies I got the replacement in today and it still doesn't work so I don't believe it's the power supply itself. Edit: It's the 8th pin. (counting from top to bottom, left to right.)

You didnt just buy a new GPU already have you, since I think with a old Pentium 4 running a 1.5Ghz, your in need for a overhaul...
You need to be looking for a ATX spec 2.0 PSU, that should work with the pc, but again... I dont think its worth upgrading, just get a new pc. For roughtly $500 you can get something decent ![]() |
