Need help deciding...

Okay, i'm getting a new motherboard, new CPU, and (of course) new RAM to go with it.

I got a code to get $40.00 off this $140.00 CPU:
Newegg.com - AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor - CPUs / Processors
so, $100.00

I also got a code to get $5.00 off and $10.00 rebate from this motherboard:
Newegg.com - BIOSTAR A770 A2+ AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards
so, $55.00

RAM? not sure yet... I use Windows XP Service 2 Edition and heard it cant support 4GB?

These are the only things I plan on switching; If anyone comes up with any other deals that can match (or are better than what I just listed) the ones on newegg, feel free to post.

I wanna keep my budget between $250-$300 (the lower the better, of course :P)

I'm just tired of using my 3-year old 2.67GHz Intel Pentium 4, with a really old ASUS mobo, and 2GB of crappy RAM.

Thanks in advance

First question I have is whether your OS is a full version or OEM version? If it is a full version then you can transfer it to your new components without issue. If it is an OEM version then you may/probably will not be able to transfer it to your new mobo as OEM versions of Windows XP are tied to the mobo they are initially installed upon when activated. Aside from that on the hardware items, Biostar would not be my first choice for mobo but I don't see anything wrong with it. The processor is fine. Just add some ram....

Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory $85.00

Should be fine so long as your OS will transfer. You will not gain the full benefit of the 4Gb of ram as 32bit OS will not recognize it all, but you should still have access to ~3.25Gb of the 4Gb.

Well, I custom built my computer 3 years ago (and have been upgrading hardware) and havent had any troubles, so I'm guessing it's Full version lol

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Biostar either, but the specs and the deal on it seems fair :-P

Thanks Pwn

Well sure...but no one really abides by that agreement. =P Just call microsoft, every one and their grandma does it, (it is so common i don't even feel wrong about posting it, haha) say you got a new motherboard because your other one got fried (step on it after you take it out, then you wont have to feel bad about lying to the almighty microsoft) and you are good to go.

And, IMO, i'm not sure that upgrade is worth the trouble/money. All you are really gonna do is gimp your computer along for a little while longer and upgrade again soon. What is your video card by the way?

Well, my processor is slowly dying, and it is extremely noticeable (I've had it for 3-4 years) so I figured it was time for a new one, which is why I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it.
I'm using HIS Radeon X1650 XT IceQ Turbo
thanks for the feedback fluffy

I've been building from ground up, just over time.
Would my CPU fan: Newegg.com - Thermaltake CL-P0257 Blue orb II CPU Cooler for LGA775 & K8 - CPU Fans & Heatsinks

work with the MOBO i planned on getting:
Newegg.com - BIOSTAR A770 A2+ AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

That HSF does not list socket AM2 as a compatible format. You would need to use another cooler.

However, the CPU you list is a boxed retail CPU. That means it comes supplied with a cooler specifically designed to meet it's thermal requirements so you don't need to worry about getting another HSF. Just use the one that comes with the CPU.
