Vista SP1 installation problem
Well I'm losing my sound after installing the service pack 1 for vista. I've tried disabling/enabling it again, uninstalling it, scanning for it again, searching for updates... none of those things worked in my case. I've uninstall the service pack a week ago and I've gain my sound again. Now, tonight I've given another try by disabling my sound card from my BIOS before installing SP1 again and enabling it again afterward and no success it still doesn't seems to recognize my card after it.
Now, the only thing I see working if I want to update to the service pack and have some sound is buying a new sound card but before doing so I was wondering if any of you would have other ideas to get it to work instead of buying something new that I don't really need except for hearing some noises again. My motherboard is an M2N-E SLI. I know I'm not the only one with that same problem searched for a while already on multiple links I've came by from Google. I just can't seem to find a solution which works for me. Thanks in advance for your help. |

From what I am finding on various tech forums, vendor forums, and the C-Media forums I think you would be best served by disabling the on-board sound and get a dedicated sound card. It appears that the audio solution on your board is questionable at best and C-Media is not offering any support beyond telling you to go to your mobo manufacturer.
www.cmedia.com.tw :: View topic - Onboard audio and Vista Even the link to Driver Downloads on their forums is a 404 error dead page. Because this is a USB based sound solution (unlike most integrated audio) it can (from some of the posts I have read) play havoc with the USB functions of your board in addition to apparently not providing satisfactory audio. Depending on your budget I would opt for one of the following: Newegg.com - Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Card - Sound Cards $32.99 Newegg.com - Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Card - Sound Cards $90.99 Newegg.com - Creative 70SB046A00000 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional Series - Sound Cards $135.99 Support/Drivers for them can be found here... Nice explanations. I knew my card was shitty but it did the job for a while. I'll probably go for the cheapest because in the end I don't really care about the output it gives as long as I can hear the sound coming out.

Here is a couple of things i found...
If after installing Vista SP1 you find that you have no audio, here is what you may have to do: Open Control Panel > Sound > Under Playback and Recording tabs, Select and Set Defaults. Additionally or alternatively, you may also have to try this: Click Start > Type Device Manager in Vista's Start Menu Search Bar > Hit Enter. Device Manager will open. Expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Locate your audio device. Double click on it to open its Properties box. See whether the driver is installed and the device working properly. In the Driver tab, click on Update Driver. Click OK. Else you may have to uninstall the Driver (but DONT delete it) and then in the Device Manager > Action > Scan for hardware changes. This will reinstall the driver. Or try this: If you go to the Control Panel -> Sound, you should be able to turn the feature on. It's been reported that SP1 update turns directSound off. Or, alternatively go to microsoft's page about this problem =P You experience problems with sound after you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Keep us posted big guy |

Open Control Panel > Sound > Under Playback and Recording tabs. There's absolutely nothing except a message : "No audio device installed".
Does that mean Windows Vista doesn't detect my card at all anymore after SP1 is installed? Is it even worth it to search for drivers in that case? I forgot to mention I'm using the onboard card so I can't really think about getting it out and plugging it back in hope windows finds it after. Last edited by Picky; 06-12-2008 at 04:46 PM. |

You can go here ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- and get the latest driver for your sound chip and see if that corrects your issue. The last version for Vista is 6.0.07.0207 with a release date of 08/31/07.
